ボブ・デュラン
今年のノーベル文学賞を、ボブ・デュランが受賞したことについて、
歌手が文学賞を受賞するなんてそぐわしくない、との発言が聞かれました。
特に日本では、人気作家の村上春樹が受賞を逃したとかで騒がれ、
誰も予想しなかったボブ・デュランの受賞に、やっかみもあったかも。
だけど彼の歌詞や生き方は、妥協せずに自分を貫く見本のようで、
現実において多くの伝説を残し、詩の力もいかんなく発揮しています。
僕はボブ・ディランのことは詳しくないし、特にファンでもありませんでした。
それでも「風に吹かれて」や、「ミスター・タンブリン・マン」など、
あたりまえのように知っているし、その歌詞も知っているのです。
たしかに反戦歌詞として有名になり、いまだに歌われ続けてはいますが、
彼の歌詞は単なる反戦と言うより、人間とは何かと問いかけるものが多い。
その意味では僕ももっと共感して良かったけど、時代が少しずれていたのです。
もう少し前の世代なら、ボブ・デュランやＰＰＭに共感したでしょうが、
「ディランは最高だった」と言うジョンの発言から、彼を過去の人と受け止めた。
だけどその時代でも、ボブ・ディランは自分と向き合って歩き続けており、
自らが書く歌詞と格闘して、孤独を深めていたように思われます。
そうした彼の心を見る上で、この歌詞ほど適したものはないでしょう。

歌詞の和訳はたくさん出ているので、英文原詩のまま載せておきます。
「風に吹かれて」で、反戦フォークのカリスマ的になったボブ・デュランは、
この歌を発表したときには、ほとんど支持を得られませんでした。
それでも彼は自分に正直に、この曲こそ当時の自分を表現する歌として、
歌い続けることで、メッセージを届ける歌手としての地位を確立しました。
この強い意志がなければ、誰も成功することはないのでしょう。

「あまりの事に、言うべき言葉が見つからなかった」と言うのも、本心でしょう。
僕がアメリカ在住時に見た、唯一の音楽映画「ラスト・ワルツ」さえ、
その主役ザ・バンドが、ディランのバックバンドだったと知ったときは、
自分がいかにコンパクトな世界に生きているか、シャカの手を見る思いでした。
今も現役で活躍する、たぐいまれな歌手であり詩人だと納得します。
